Keyword cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization is when several pages on your site target the same query, so they compete and none ranks as well as one strong page could.

Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more of your pages aim at the same search term and intent. Search engines may switch between them, show the weaker one, or rank both poorly. It dilutes links and signals that could have gone to one page.

It's common on sites that publish often without a plan, and on ecommerce sites with overlapping category pages. Not every overlap is a problem. Two pages can rank for similar words if they serve different intents. The issue is when both try to answer the same question.

Practical point: look in Google Search Console at a key query and see which pages get impressions for it. If several appear, decide which should win. Merge the others into it with a 301 redirect, or rework them to cover different intents. Update internal links so they point to the page you've chosen.
