Link audit

Also called: Backlink audit

A link audit is a review of the links pointing to your site, checking quality, relevance, anchors and whether each link is still live.

A link audit is a structured look at your backlinks. You export them from a backlink tool and Google Search Console, then review the sources, anchors, link types and status. The aim is to learn what you have, what's helping, and what's a problem.

Audits are useful after taking over a site, after buying links, after a traffic drop that might relate to links, or just once or twice a year. They also help you find links that have gone missing. Remember that each tool has its own crawl and its own scores, and they won't match each other or Google.

Practical point: sort by referring domain, not by every individual link. Flag clear spam, paid links you didn't intend, and lost links worth reclaiming. Act only where there's a real reason, and write down what you decided. Don't disavow in bulk just because a score is high.

LinkHatch's free link check at /link-check tests whether links are live and dofollow and the page is indexable.
