Toxic link
Also called: Spammy backlink
A toxic link is a backlink from a spammy or manipulative site that could harm trust in yours. Most low quality links are simply ignored.
'Toxic link' is a term popularized by SEO tools for backlinks that look spammy, such as links from link farms, hacked sites or irrelevant foreign pages. The tools assign a score and flag links they think are risky. Google itself doesn't use the term.
Google has said it's good at ignoring most junk links, so you don't need to worry about every low quality link pointing at you. Concern is reasonable if you've bought links in the past, been hit by a manual action, or see a sudden wave of obviously paid links you didn't make.
Practical point: don't trust a tool's toxicity score blindly. Review the flagged links by hand. Many are harmless. For clear problems, first try asking the site owner to remove the link. Use disavow only when you have a real reason, and keep notes of what you did and why.
LinkHatch's free link check at /link-check lets you test whether links are still live and dofollow.
