llms.txt

llms.txt is a proposed plain text file at a site's root that gives AI tools a short, curated guide to its most useful pages.

llms.txt is a proposal for a simple markdown file placed at the root of a website. It gives language models a short summary of the site and links to its most useful pages, written in a clean format that's easy to read.

It's not an official standard, and it's debated. Major AI companies haven't all confirmed that they read it, and Google has said it doesn't use it for search. Some documentation sites have adopted it and developers say it helps coding assistants. For most sites, the benefit is unproven.

Practical point: it's cheap to create, so it's fine to try if you have good documentation or reference pages. Keep it accurate and short, and don't treat it as a ranking or citation lever. Your normal pages, crawl access and clear content matter more. Check your server logs to see whether any AI crawler requests the file.
