GEO
Also called: Generative engine optimization
GEO is the practice of improving how often and how accurately generative AI tools mention or cite your brand and content in their answers.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It's a label for work that aims to get a brand or page mentioned or cited in answers from AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features. The term overlaps with AEO and LLM visibility, and people use them loosely.
Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how these tools pick sources. What the evidence suggests is that they draw on the same material as search, including well ranked pages, authoritative sites, and consistent mentions of a brand across the web. Original data and clear explanations seem to get cited more.
Practical point: treat GEO as an extension of good SEO and PR, not a separate trick. Make sure AI crawlers can reach your key pages, be clear about what you do, and earn mentions on credible sites. Test a set of real questions each month and record what appears, since answers vary from run to run.
