Editorial link

Also called: Earned link

An editorial link is one a publisher chooses to add because it helps their readers, not because of a payment or an exchange.

An editorial link is a link a writer or editor places on their own judgment. They cite your research, point to your tool, or recommend your guide because it helps the reader. No deal is needed, which is why search engines see these as the most trustworthy kind.

They are earned, not requested, though outreach can help people find you. A great resource, an original study or a useful tool makes the case. It also helps that the linking page is on a relevant site with an audience.

Practical point: separate the idea of an editorial link from the method. Pitching a journalist with a good story and having them link is still editorial, because they decide. Paying someone to place a link isn't, and ought to be treated as an ad. Be clear in your own mind which one you're after, and check the live result.

Links you can check.

Every link we place comes with a receipt. The free link plan shows the pages worth pushing and what the links would cost.
