Brand mention
Also called: Unlinked brand reference
A brand mention is any reference to your company name online, linked or not. Both search engines and AI tools may use them as signals.
A brand mention is any place your company is named on the web, such as in an article, review, podcast notes or forum thread. It may or may not include a link. Mentions show that people talk about you, which shapes how you're seen.
Search engines have long used links to find relationships between sites, and some SEOs believe unlinked mentions count as a lesser signal. Google hasn't confirmed how much, so treat that as unproven. For AI tools, mentions on credible sites seem to matter, because those pages are what the models read.
Practical point: track where you're mentioned with an alert or a monitoring tool. Make sure the facts are right, ask for a link where it makes sense, and build relationships with sites that cover your area. Aim for mentions in places your customers read, not just anywhere that will take them.
Links you can check.
