Link building
Link building is the work of earning links from other websites to yours, usually through content, outreach, partnerships and PR.
Link building means getting other websites to link to yours. The common routes are publishing something worth citing, pitching editors and bloggers, writing guest articles, asking for links to be added to existing pages, and earning press coverage. It sits under off-page SEO, because the work happens on other people's sites.
It matters because links are still one of the signals search engines use to find and weigh pages. They also send referral visitors, which is often the more reliable benefit. It doesn't work as a switch. A link helps a page that's already worth ranking, and it can't rescue thin content or a broken site.
Practical point: ask what you would do if search engines didn't exist. A link on a site your customers read is worth having either way. Avoid anything that creates links at scale with no editorial step, because that's where penalties and wasted budget come from.
