Meta description
A meta description is a short summary of a page in its HTML. Google may show it under the title in results, but often writes its own.
A meta description is a tag in a page's code that summarizes the page in a sentence or two. Search engines may show it as the text under your title in results. Google often rewrites it to match the query, so you can't count on yours being used.
It isn't a direct ranking factor, but it can affect whether people click. A clear, accurate description that says what the page offers helps people decide. Vague or stuffed descriptions don't. Aim for roughly 120 to 155 characters so it doesn't get cut off on most screens.
Practical point: write a unique description for each important page, lead with the main benefit or answer, and match the page's real content. Don't copy the same text across many pages. Check in Google Search Console which pages have low click through rates despite good impressions, and improve those first.
